Naomi Groves Jackson
As the niece of the celebrated artist A. Y. Jackson, Dr. Naomi Jackson Groves grew up under the artistic influence and ideals of the Group of Seven. Her uncle was a particularly strong influence on her artistic style. His perception of Canadian identity as defined through the environment is evident in Groves's paintings.
Naomi Jackson Groves was born in Montreal in 1910. She was the eldest daughter of commercial artist H.A.C. Jackson and the niece of Canadian artist A.Y. Jackson. Naomi studied at the Art Association of Montreal and took private lessons from Harold Beament, Sarah Robertson and her uncle, A. Y. Jackson. Naomi also studied at the Art Association of Montreal with Lilias Torrance Newton.
In 1936 Groves traveled through Europe with A.Y. Jackson; she published an account of that trip entitled “Two Jacksons Abroad” in 2000.
Naomi earned her doctorate from Harvard University; her dissertation focused on the German sculptor and writer Ernst Barlach.
From 1942-43 Groves acted as Assistant Director of the National Gallery of Canada, and in 1951 she joined McMaster University as an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts.
Groves was also an accomplished writer and translator, publishing a number of works that focused on the life and career of her uncle A.Y. Jackson. Another most interesting book by Naomi is “Winter into Summer: Lapland Diary, 1945-46” . Widely respected for her scholarship and philanthropy, Groves was awarded the Order of Canada in 1993. As well as being an artist, Groves was a distinguished lawyer, and lecturer at McMaster University.
Her paintings can be found in many national, and international collections and museums and in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the McMaster Museum of Art. Naomi exhibited with the RCA in 1934 and the AAM from 1934 to1943
Naomi Jackson Groves passed away in Ottawa in 2001.
